Emotional Healing Through Reiki

I completed my Reiki training in 2016 and have since quietly practiced on myself and others. Over the years, I never saw myself as an advocate for Reiki—maybe to avoid conflict or debates around its legitimacy. But recently, Reiki has re-emerged powerfully in my life through my dad’s illness. As I connected more deeply with him and tried to ease his pain, I developed daily Reiki rituals. This process has inspired a desire to explain Reiki in a way that resonates with others. This post is part of that exploration.

Understanding emotional healing

We’re living in a time where more people recognize that emotional healing is essential for a safe and loving society.

Reiki approaches mental well-being through the lens of energy. We all have our unique energy or “vibe”—think of it as a personal reservoir.

A few things can disrupt this energy system, leading to discomfort or unease:

  1. Depletion: When we use energy faster than we can replenish it. This happens when we’re mentally or physically overwhelmed, or as a subconscious response to trauma and grief, which continually drains our energy. Over time, this can show up as anxiety, forgetfulness, fatigue, or a lack of interest in social activities.

  2. Absorption: Taking on other people’s energy, which disrupts our sense of sovereignty. This is often why certain interactions or environments leave us feeling drained or burdened with emotions that don’t seem to be our own.

  3. Blockages: These occur when our energy becomes stagnant. We may feel stuck in a story, pattern, or habit, which can manifest as physical pain or unproductive emotional cycles.

  4. Delayed Healing: Unexpressed emotions, repressed memories, or avoidant emotional styles can prolong emotional suffering, similar to how energy blockages form. These unresolved emotions can surface as persistent triggers that resist healing.

Reiki works with the body’s energy system to mend blockages, cracks, leaks, and depletion. Rather than just addressing symptoms, Reiki seeks to work with the root cause.

Some examples

Let’s look at an example. A client comes in with sleep issues, desperate for relief, and mentions they work long hours. While over-the-counter medications might induce sleep artificially, Reiki digs deeper. After a few sessions, not only do they experience better sleep, but their energy system starts healing the emotional aspect that ties their worth to working long hours.

Another client might come in with gut issues despite following a healthy diet. While they’re searching for symptom relief, Reiki may uncover unexpressed emotions stored in the gut that need to be released. Through Reiki, the client is supported in safely expressing those emotions, allowing the body to begin healing.

Shifts through Reiki

Because Reiki works beyond surface-level relief, it often takes 5-6 sessions to start noticing shifts—whether big or small.

People frequently see improvements in the physical symptoms, but more importantly, they begin to experience emotional and mindset shifts such as:

  • Noticing patterns before entering a relationship

  • Gaining clarity over a difficult situation

  • Building the capacity to handle conflict and tough conversations

  • Speaking up and setting boundaries with confidence and respect

Moving beyond proof, towards trust

It saddens me when people ask for hard evidence or statistics to “prove” that Reiki works. I tend not to entertain those questions because they draw us into the realm of the mind, away from the energy and spiritual dimensions. If our minds could solve everything, intelligent people would have no emotional baggage—and we know that’s far from the truth.

It’s the same mind that reduces love, one of our most profound emotions, to a series of chemical reactions and neurons firing. How sad, when love is something so much greater. The mind, while powerful, isn’t everything. Some things, like love and healing, are meant to be experienced, not analyzed.

I trust that people who need Reiki will find their way to it when they’re ready to take that leap of faith—just as I did.
