Many of my clients tell me they aren’t getting quality sleep. Some fall asleep easily but wake up in the middle of the night and then can’t fall back asleep. Others get up multiple times during the night. Either way, they wake up feeling tired and have to push against their body’s cry for more sleep to get on with the day.
Our bodies need sleep. Period. Sleep rejuvenates and repairs our bodies during the night, and we need to replenish our energy reserves to be able to meet the demands of the day. Otherwise, eventually, lack of sleep will catch up with us in the form of impaired productivity, health issues or mood changes.
It’s critical to understand the stressors that contribute to lower quality of sleep. Some stressors include:
- Events and circumstances in life at work or in personal life
- Health challenges and medications that impede or impair sleep
- Habits that lead to poor quality sleep. e.g., scrolling on the phone in bed
Shifting the root cause often requires cultivating better habits, which in turn takes time. As I go through that process with my clients, I often look for ways to offer relief to their body in the interim.
This is where this wonderful adaptogen herb – nutmeg – comes into the picture. It’s found in many kitchens and is often used in baked goods, especially during the fall. It has a slightly sedative and soothing effect on the nervous system. Incorporating nutmeg in one's diet, in consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner, can help the body prepare for sleep and stay asleep for longer.
As with any herb, nutmeg is taken in very small quantities – a sprinkle goes a long way.
One of the reasons I look to Ayurveda is because it incorporates natural herbs and lifestyle changes as the first line of action to rectify long standing physical and emotional challenges. The closer we are to nature in terms of what we feed our body, the more sustainable the remedy.
