Harnessing the Power of Mantras

Updated: Jun 20, 2023

Three profound mantras for spiritual growth and healing

What are Mantras?

The combination of syllables that are repeated for a specific purpose. Mantras can be silently recited within or spoken aloud, depending on our state of mind.

When our thoughts are restless and we seek tranquility, we may choose to immerse ourselves in a soothing mantra, allowing its vibrations to resonate within our minds. Conversely, when we yearn for invigoration, we may chant these mantras aloud, harnessing their transformative energy.

How do they work?

Across diverse traditions, both ancient and contemporary, thoughts and words have been revered for their immense power.

By intentionally reciting mantras that are meaningful to us and align with our current needs, we infuse our conscious and subconscious minds with a dominant thought. This helps train our monkey mind, directing it towards words that deeply resonate within us.

More spiritual....less dogmatic

The mantras I share today hail primarily from Kundalini traditions, drawing upon their rich tapestry of spiritual wisdom. However, do note that mantras can possess nuanced interpretations across different literary sources.

Something for everyone...

While my explanations may lean towards spirituality, I encourage those who may not resonate with such language to read the explanation of the mantras in this post and explore interpretations that harmonize with their personal concepts and values. Additionally, I urge you to listen to the accompanying music, for I truly believe that the serene melodies transcend belief systems and provide solace to all.

Right way to chant?

One question I frequently encounter is, "What is the 'right' way to chant?" Although various schools of thought may advocate specific hand positions and rituals, I firmly believe that the beauty of chanting lies in the intention and attention we bring to it.

My favorite mantras

1. Sat Nam – Reality as identified in truth

This mantra inspires us to align ourselves with our highest truth and embrace our truest identity. Chanting this mantra is believed to sow the seed of inner alignment. Obviously, bringing our truth into action and execution would always be our choice.

This mantra is short and easy to chant sometimes while I am on a walk or making dinner. There are so many beautiful renditions of this mantra, but I want to share one of my favorites below. The sounds are soft and peaceful and often work to settle my mind.

2. Sune Ai – I am listening.

In our hectic lives, we often overlook the importance of listening—to God and our inner selves. When we have to make a decision, we often turn to external sources, such as advice from people and endless internet search. This kundalini mantra reminds us to also prioritize moments of inner reflection. When feeling disconnected from the divine, I turn to this mantra, restoring the channel of spiritual practice.

3. Ong Namo Gurudev Namo – I bow down to the teacher in me.

This is my favorite mantra ever. It celebrates the innate knowing and wisdom we have in ourselves. Spiritually, when we are listening (Sune-Ai), our inner teacher is connected to the divine (or God – howsoever you want to think about it).

The mantra encourages us to pay our respects to that teacher who has witnessed so many experiences and events in our life and continues guiding us. In certain challenging times, I would listen to this again and again to feel comforted and held in support.
